Anadol's studio trained a generative model on the museum's own collection data and let it run “unsupervised” in the lobby: a continuous, never-repeating field of form and colour that reinterprets modern art's history as the machine dreams it, responding live to the room's light, movement and weather.
It matters here for a reason beyond scale. MoMA's acquisition made an AI-generated, real-time, software-based work — with a tokenised edition — part of a permanent museum collection, setting a precedent for how institutions can own art that is a running program rather than a fixed object.
